The opening phase of the BPL auction brought unexpected results as two of Bangladesh’s cricket veterans—Mahmudullah Riyad and Mushfiqur Rahim—remained unsold. Mahmudullah, classified as a ‘B’ category player with a base price of 3.5 million Taka, surprisingly did not attract any bids.
In the previous season, Mahmudullah had represented Fortune Barishal, contributing significantly to their championship run. Although he has retired from international cricket, his domestic performances continue to shine, particularly with the bat. His experience, leadership, and versatility would have made him a valuable asset to any BPL franchise. Yet in this auction, teams appeared to favour younger or emerging players over seasoned stars.
Mushfiqur Rahim, a former captain and experienced wicketkeeper-batsman, faced the same fate. Despite his leadership credentials and proven ability to anchor innings under pressure, he too was left unsold. This outcome underlines the changing dynamics in franchise cricket, where current form, potential, and versatility are increasingly prioritised over reputation alone.
BPL rules allow unsold players to re-enter a subsequent auction round. In this second phase, their category will be reduced by one, making them financially more attractive to teams. For instance, Mahmudullah’s ‘B’ category status would drop to ‘C,’ increasing the likelihood of being picked.
The second auction offers these two stalwarts another chance to showcase their value. If selected, they could bring much-needed experience and stability to teams that are otherwise dominated by youthful energy. Cricket enthusiasts now watch closely, hoping to see these experienced campaigners back in action, blending skill and strategy to influence the outcome of the upcoming BPL season.
