The Bangladesh Premier League auction is back—and for the first time in twelve years. This alone has sent a fresh wave of anticipation among cricket followers. The new season is set to begin on 19 December, with six participating teams, among which Noakhali Express has emerged as the latest addition. Before the cricketing battle begins on the field, fans are looking forward to the 30 November auction that is shaping up to be one of the most dramatic in recent memory.
Before the auction, franchises are allowed to sign a maximum of two local and two foreign players. At least one of each category must be contracted beforehand. This has intensified negotiations for top-tier players, with franchises vying to secure the most experienced or in-form stars ahead of the official bidding war.
A key talking point is the foreign-player budget. Each franchise is required to allocate up to 350,000 US dollars for recruiting overseas cricketers. Buying at least two foreign players during the auction is mandatory. After the auction, however, teams still retain flexibility to sign additional overseas cricketers of their choice, making it possible to adjust their squad strategy as needed.
The auction pool consists of 250 foreign cricketers, divided into five categories. Category A players carry a base price of 35,000 dollars, with each bid increasing by 5,000 dollars. Category B starts at 26,000 dollars, Category C at 20,000 dollars, Category D at 15,000 dollars and Category E also at 15,000 dollars. The bidding increments vary between 3,000 and 1,000 dollars depending on the category. It is expected that prominent international names will trigger a tense battle among the franchises.
The domestic auction is equally competitive. Although the BCB has not revealed the total number of Bangladeshi players entering the auction, each team must assemble 12–14 local cricketers from the bidding process. The base prices for local categories begin at 5 million taka for Category A and drop to 11,000 taka in Category F. Increments range from 500,000 taka to 20,000 taka depending on the category.
Squad-building rules require franchises to pick at least one player from Category A, three each from Categories B, C and D, two from Category E, and unlimited players from Category F. Teams have been given a domestic-player budget of 45 million taka, excluding the two directly signed Bangladeshi players who fall outside this limit.
Franchises may also register up to 12 staff members, including managerial and coaching personnel. With financial planning, auction tactics and player combinations at stake, teams are working around the clock to sharpen their strategies.
The return of the auction has injected new life into the BPL, promising high-stakes bidding, unpredictable signings and an intense competition long before the first ball is bowled. Fans and analysts alike believe that this year’s auction will reshape not only team dynamics but also the future of franchise cricket in Bangladesh.
