Hannan Sarkar Returns to Centre Stage – Rajshahi Warriors Drop Foreign Coach Trend!

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is set for a refreshing shift in coaching philosophy as the Rajshahi Warriors have announced a completely home-grown coaching panel, breaking away from the long-standing trend of relying heavily on foreign expertise. At the forefront of this strategic overhaul stands former national opener Hannan Sarkar, who has been appointed as the team’s new head coach ahead of the forthcoming BPL season.

The Warriors’ management officially confirmed the appointment today and revealed that former Bangladesh captain Rajin Saleh will serve as the team’s senior assistant coach. The decision is already being seen as a symbolic move—one that underlines faith in local coaching acumen and a desire to build a cricketing culture rooted in the domestic talent pipeline.

Hannan Sarkar, who represented Bangladesh in 17 Tests and 20 ODIs, transitioned into coaching soon after retiring. His coaching credentials include a Level-One certification in 2010, followed by a Level-Two certification from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Importantly, Sarkar also boasts previous BPL experience, having served as assistant coach for the Duronto Rajshahi franchise during the first two editions of the league. His return to Rajshahi—this time as head coach—marks a full-circle moment that the franchise hopes will translate into renewed on-field success.

Rajin Saleh, known for his composed batting and leadership during his playing days, brings further depth to the coaching setup. Currently serving as the batting coach for BCB’s High-Performance Unit, Saleh is accustomed to working with young, emerging cricketers and preparing them for high-pressure tournaments. His familiarity with BPL environments is expected to complement Sarkar’s strategic vision seamlessly.

Beyond coaching changes, Rajshahi Warriors have created additional buzz by securing a marquee signing: Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. On Thursday, Shanto officially joined the Warriors through a direct signing agreement. Although he has been a regular feature in the BPL since 2016, this will be the first time he represents his hometown franchise—a move expected to energise Rajshahi’s passionate cricket fanbase.

Observers believe that Rajshahi Warriors’ latest moves are not only tactical but also cultural. Their decision to invest in local coaching talent reflects a growing belief that Bangladeshi coaches understand the domestic circuit’s strengths and challenges better than anyone else. With two seasoned former national players at the helm, the franchise is banking on experience, continuity and local insight.

The Warriors’ management has also hinted that more player announcements are forthcoming, with an emphasis on building a squad centred on homegrown talent while still balancing a few strategic foreign picks. Their early preparations suggest a clear long-term plan: establishing a cohesive team identity and building towards sustained competitiveness.

As the new BPL season approaches, Rajshahi’s bold decisions have already made them one of the most talked-about teams. Whether this all-Bangladeshi coaching setup becomes a trendsetter for future seasons remains to be seen—but for now, the Warriors have undeniably set the tone for a transformative campaign.
