India have been dealt a significant setback ahead of their home series against South Africa as star opener Shubman Gill has officially been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series. Gill, who suffered a sudden neck spasm during the Kolkata Test, was forced to walk off the field midway and later missed the second Test as well. His recovery has not progressed as expected, prompting the selectors to exclude him from the ODI squad.
The ODI series against the visiting Proteas is scheduled to begin on 30 November. With Gill unavailable, KL Rahul has been handed the responsibility of leading the side in the 50-over format. According to a report published by the Times of India, Rahul is set to return as India’s interim captain, filling the void left by the injured opener.
Gill’s absence is not the only concern for the Indian team management. Middle-order mainstay and deputy skipper Shreyas Iyer has also been ruled out. Iyer is yet to fully recover from the rib injury he sustained during India’s recent tour of Australia. Without two key batters for such an important home series, selectors have had to rethink the team’s balance and strategy.
Rahul, who last captained India during their 2023 tour of South Africa, is being viewed as the most suitable candidate to stabilise the squad. His composure, leadership experience and ability to adapt across formats have reportedly impressed the team management.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has been moved to Mumbai, where he is currently under the supervision of specialist medical staff. Before beginning his rehabilitation programme, he has been instructed to take several days of complete rest. There are rising concerns that Gill may also miss the T20I series that follows.
Once the ODI series concludes, India and South Africa will begin their five-match T20I series on 9 December. Without Gill, India may be forced to alter their top order significantly, leading to discussions about potential replacements. Young batters from domestic cricket are being considered, though the final decision is yet to be announced.
In recent months, injuries have become a major area of concern for Indian cricket. Losing two frontline batters before the start of a challenging series has placed additional pressure on the rest of the squad. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Rahul and his men respond to this tricky situation.
